Digital Radiography (x-rays)
The benefits of dental X-rays are well known: they help dentists diagnose relatively common disorders such as cavities, periodontal disease and infections. Without this ability to see inside a tooth and beneath the gums, more disease would go unchecked. Patients would experience more pain and discomfort along with more teeth being lost because proper treatment couldn’t be started in time.
Several changes made by dentists and required by regulatory agencies have reduced radiation exposure in dental X-rays through the years. We have installed state- of-the-art digital imagery equipment. The use of digital imagery reduces radiation by as much as 80%. The digital imagery machines not only allow us to use much lower doses of radiation, they also do not use any of the harsh chemicals to develop the old type of X-rays, benefiting our environment along with our own bodies.
The images used in our dental office emit extremely small doses of radiation. However, for the safety of our patients we only take images as recommended by the ADA. State and health departments check our machines biennially for accuracy and safety.
Intra-oral camera
The intra-oral camera is small wand-shaped camera that is moved around the inside of your mouth. We can freeze and save an image to view on the computer screen inside the treatment room. The intra-oral camera helps our patients make an educated decision on what treatment they prefer.
Use of the intra-oral camera allows you to see decay, calculus, plaque, bleeding gums, cracked fillings or fractured teeth inside your mouth. With this information we can, together, discuss the optimal treatment plan for you. The images can also be sent to our lab technicians, specialists, and insurance companies so we can provide the best treatment possible for you.
ViziLite Plus (oral cancer screening test)
Early detection saves lives. ViziLite Plus helps with early detection. Oral cancer is one of the most curable diseases when it’s caught early. The combination of a conventional visual examination and an annual ViziLite Plus exam has been proven successful in identifying other types of precancerous and cancerous abnormalities. It’s particularly important for patients at increased risk for oral cancer. When premalignancies or early-stage cancer is found, treatment is simple, less invasive and more than 90% successful.
Vizilite is a very quick and painless exam. First, you rinse with a cleansing solution. Then, your dental professional will examine your mouth using ViziLite, a specially designed light technology. Cancer screening technologies have been saving lives for years. Now your dental professional has new technology to use in addition to the visual / manual screening methods.
Who’s at risk for oral cancer?
- Highest risk - patients age 40 and older with lifestyle risk factors (tobacco use/alcohol consumption) and patients with history of oral cancer.
- High risk - patients age 40 and older with lifestyle risk factors.
- Increased risk - patients age 18-39 with lifestyle risk factors.
